If you’ve ever gone to bed and forgotten to turn off the stove, you know how dangerous it can be. It’s important to make sure that all of your appliances are turned off before you go to bed or leave your home. Leaving the stove on all night can be a fire hazard and cause serious damage.
The first thing you should do if you realize the stove was left on all night is to turn it off immediately. If the stove has been on for a long period of time, it’s likely that it has become very hot and could be a fire hazard. Make sure that all of the knobs are turned off and that there is nothing flammable near the stove.
Once the stove is off, inspect the area around it for any signs of damage or overheating. Check for any melted plastic or scorch marks on the countertop or wall behind the stove. If you find any signs of damage, turn off the electricity to that area of your home and call an electrician immediately.
If there is no visible damage, check for any smoke or burning smells in your home. If you detect either of these, open windows and doors to air out your home and call 911 if necessary. In some cases, leaving a stove on all night can cause carbon monoxide poisoning if there is not enough ventilation in your kitchen or if your range hood is not functioning properly. If this is the case, evacuate your home immediately and call 911 for help.
Finally, make sure to check all other appliances in your home before going back to bed or leaving your house again. Double-check ovens, microwaves, irons, coffee makers and other small appliances that may have been left on accidentally as well as making sure that outlets are not overloaded with too many plugs at once. Taking these extra steps will help ensure that you don’t have to worry about another appliance being left on while you’re away from home.
